Week in Review – Family Fun

Are you ready for the changing seasons? Over at the Fun section we are looking forward to some fall related activities, but at the same time we are squeezing in a few last minute goodbye to summer plans, too. We started off the week with Mastermind. It’s a simple to learn, hard to master game to get those brains geared up for school. Read about how to adapt the game for younger players or to make it even harder. Tiny Origami Stars are a fun and simple craft. Consider them for prizes, secret messages, to make a mobile, or to … Continue reading

Aqua Dots – Craft Project

We splurged on Aqua Dots a few weeks ago. They were on the expensive side for a craft. Even on sale the starter kit came in at sixteen dollars. The boys had seen the commercials though, so they wanted it. I thought it looked cute and justified the price because it would be a good exercise for fine motor coordination. I have mixed opinions on this toy. The end product is very cute and colorful. So cute that it makes us want to make more. However, the kit did not come with enough “dots” to even make three small projects. … Continue reading

Fuse Bead Fun – Easy Crafts

I boxed up all our “melty beads” last week. That’s what we called the fuse beads made by Hama or Perler beads. We have done so many projects over the years with these beads. We’ve made refrigerator magnets, items for mobiles, package tags, Christmas ornmanets, and much more. If you’ve never used these beads, you should give them a try. They come in all sorts of colors, even clear, sparkly and glow-in-the-dark. You place the beads flat on a form. Some of the forms are shaped like baby chicks, children, dogs, dolphins, or rainbows. Other forms are just large circles … Continue reading

Mobiles – Craft Project Fun

I like to make mobiles with kids because they are such a versatile craft project. You can use just about anything to make one. You can adapt them to fit any room theme, the kid’s favorite character of the week, or a mixture of all the child’s interests. All mobiles will need string or thread. But what goes on is completely up to you. For sticks you can use wooden dowels, chopsticks, kabob sticks, wire hangers, tinker toy sticks, metal strips from erector sets, or even sticks from the yard. For a miniature version you can even use toothpicks. The … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Tools Doing Double Duty

Nothing says Happy Valentine’s Day quite like a Cricut machine. Hint. Hint. My neighbor’s living room windows are freshly decorated with large hearts made from exquisite patterned scrapbook paper. Eye candy indeed. When my 7-year-old queried her on where we could buy “some of those pretty hearts” to embellish our windows, my neighbor sweetly replied: “Honey, I used my Cricut to make them.” She then promptly invited my kid over to craft some for her bedroom window. “Rub it in, why don’t you?” I’m pretty sure that was my exact retort. So, yes, a Cricut is truly an investment that … Continue reading

Tiny Origami Stars

Origami is always a fun project. It’s so fun to take paper and turn it into something totally different. Children love tiny things. Origami Wishing Stars are tiny, cute, and colorful. You might even say enchanting. I guarantee that either adults or children can pass by a few of these stars without picking them up. Wishing Stars from KLUTZ is a mini-sized kit that makes 100 tiny brightly colored origami stars. The kit comes with 100 paper strips and directions. The directions are simple and easy to follow. What is extra great is that you actually lay out the strip … Continue reading

Beaded Bookmarks

My favorite kinds of projects are easy and affordable. If they don’t even involve a trip to the craft store, that’s even better. I also like open-ended projects. By that I mean projects that can be expanded on, projects that don’t have to be done an exact precise way to work. Beaded bookmarks are that kind of project. And what’s more, they are actually quite beautiful. You will need a length of ribbon, or string, or yarn. The ribbon or string should be thin enough so that kids can slide beads on. I like to use the cord sold for … Continue reading
