More Affordable Memorial Day Funby Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger 19 May 2009 06:56 AM Since the majority of kids are still in school until June, most families stick closer to home during the long Memorial Day weekend. However, this year, the flailing economy is also contributing to families looking for fun, affordable activities that don't require traveling long distances. If you are looking for Memorial Day family-friendly fun that won't put a strain on your family's budget, consider the following: Take me out to the ballpark: Minor league baseball is an inexpensive way to enjoy time with the family. According to AAA, the average cost to buy tickets for a family of four is about $55. If you live in a smaller town, then head out to the ballpark to support your local team. If you are looking to save even more, then root on your favorite Little League team. The games are filled with impromptu moments and the best part--admission is free. Theme parties: You don't have to travel far from home to have a good time. Consider hosting your own beach block party complete with sprinklers, sand boxes, clambakes and tiki torches. You can serve frozen cocktails, grill up seafood and have a hula contest with your neighbors. Another option is to have a backyard movie night with rented movies, a projector and a screen made out of sheets tied to trees. Simple spa: Who says you have to drop a bundle to get a decent facial? Rally the troops and make your own home spa. You can get recipes for facials or other skin treatments online and at health food stores. A basic homemade facial scrub can be made with affordable ingredients, such as sea salt, honey, oats and vitamin E oil. Add a few inexpensive candles, some relaxing music and bubble bath, and you've got the ingredients for a perfect spa weekend.
