Making Math Fun

Just because your child doesn’t easily makes sense of math now, doesn’t mean he’s doomed to fail as a future number cruncher.  There are plenty of kids, who struggle with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in their early years, and then something finally clicks, and they end up as successful accountants or actuaries. To ensure that your homeschooled student achieves success in the world of mathematics, don’t rely solely on memorization.  Having children memorize math facts without teaching them why the answer is correct often leads to future problems. Kids will be much more receptive to learning math if you … Continue reading

Fun in the Dark

Not that kind of fun… As of this writing, nearly four million residents living along the East Coast of the United States are without power right now thanks to Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene. NBC News showed families in North Carolina cooking on an open fire in their backyards because they were still without electricity more than 24 hours after Irene made landfall. Despite the fact that these particular families had no power, they seemed remarkably upbeat. One mom commented that her four children were getting a bit stir crazy minus the lack of television, video games and movies. Still, there is … Continue reading

Make Learning About Money Fun For Kids

When I was a little girl my brother and sisters and I played a lot of board games. We played more cards than board games, but we still played board games. In Monopoly we had to figure out the value of property and how to get a complete set. You didn’t learn a lot about finance, though, even if you were the banker. One of my favorite games to play was The Game of Life. The Game of Life was not an entirely accurate representation of what adult life is about, but it was pretty close. You went to school, … Continue reading

Game Day Fun For Kids

The countdown to Super Bowl XLIV continues this weekend. We’ve been invited to a viewing party, but I know my 5-year-old will be bored to death, so we’re headed to a sledding party instead. However, not everyone has the same options we do. If you’re planning to cheer on your favorite team this weekend with a bunch of family and friends, don’t forget the kids. Younger children in particular may not share the same enthusiasm for sitting in front of a big screen TV watching grown men slam into each other while chasing a small ball. If young ones are … Continue reading

Festive Family Fun: Making Pinecone Christmas Trees and Paper Plate Snowmen

Like much of the country, we are getting walloped by another round of wicked winter weather. Our local mall, which was supposed to open its doors at 8 a.m. to accommodate last-minute holiday shoppers, was forced to delay doing so for three hours so plows could clear 7 inches of snow from the parking lot. In addition, the wind chills have plummeted to 35 below zero and more snow is on the way. This, of course, means it’s ideal weather for holiday crafting. If you are stuck indoors today, consider passing the time making these delightful holiday decorations. They are … Continue reading

Fun Ways to Keep Children Occupied Today

Occupying the kids the day before Thanksgiving is always a challenge. I let my boys take turns helping with the cooking which helps. And now they are old enough to mainly occupy themselves with games and computers when it’s not their turn to be in the kitchen. When they were younger though, keeping them happy and getting the cooking done was always a challenge. Particularly if I was also trying to keep the house clean for company. Going on neighborhood walks was always a great way to tire out the kids. And if there were visiting grandparents, sending them all … Continue reading

Father’s Day Fun

Father’s Day is rapidly approaching. Poor dads. They often seem to get left out. The kids make cute crafts or write poems for Mother’s Day in school, but not for Father’s Day. It’s a shame really. Dads are important. And good fathers should be celebrated. Everyone likes to know they are appreciated. Shopping for presents for my husband is hard sometimes. He wants more big ticket items like motorcycles, trips, or new computers. And while I am thrilled with mango scented shampoo and a bar of really great chocolate, it’s hard to find anything that would thrill him for such … Continue reading
