Time is running out if you want to experience the awe-inspiring wave of crimson, fiery orange, and golden hues that sweep the country this time of year. However, if you have older children it might be hard to convince them that soaking in the fall foliage scenery via a hayride can actually be fun. If that's the case, consider the following outdoor options that are a bit more exciting than a leisurely stroll through a forest.

Hot Air Balloon

There is no better way to enjoy the fiery fall foliage than from the basket of a hot-air balloon gliding over the tops of the trees. Your kids will love getting a bird's-eye view of autumn's changing hues. In Asheville, North Carolina, Asheville Hot Air Balloons caters to families looking to soar some 500 to 2,000 feet above Pisgah National Forest and the Great Smoky Mountains. The views are spectacular and the memories will last a lifetime.

Zip Line

Sail over the picturesque treetops on a zip line courtesy of Cypress Valley Canopy Tours, based just 30 miles outside of Austin, Texas. The company is one of dozens located around the country that allows families to zip right through the red, orange and yellowish hues of towering cypress, oaks, and maples.

Bike

Instead of tooling around your neighborhood on two wheels consider heading to a national park to view the fantastic fall foliage. The massive crowds that flock to places such as Yosemite National Park during the summer months disappear during the fall. You can pedal around the park at your own pace and take in the views from the flat floor of breathtaking Yosemite Valley.

Kayak

Take to the waterways this fall for a unique view of the spectacular fall foliage. An autumnal paddle along a local river is a terrific way to spend family time in the great outdoors. If you are in New England consider heading to the Saco Bound. The pristine New Hampshire waterway weaves through some of the region's most spectacular forests and farmlands.
