Camping in the Yard

Like many small children, my daughter just loves camping. Like many tired parents, I am no fan of camping. It’s not that I don’t love nature. I do love nature. We hike a lot and we go to our cabin in the summer time. That’s all good. However, hiking involves minimal preparation time, and while our cabin involves a lot of packing, once we are there we can cook with ease and sleep in a bed. Our cabin does not involve epic amounts of packing over several days for a short trip, cooking that takes many times as long to … Continue reading

Make Camping Easy: The Camping Box

I’d like to share a brilliant idea that I got from a friend. I’m implementing it in my own home over the next couple of months. It’s the idea of the camping box. You see, I can’t stand packing. It is one of the things that I despise most in the world. Before every vacation, I spend at least a week dreading the packing and a day foully irritable while I’m actually doing it. It’s not that I’m not organized. I have packing lists. I have most of the things that we need. However, my lists simply serve to remind … Continue reading

Camping Supply Fun

Part of the fun of a trip for me is preparing for it. It’s amazing what camping supplies are available now. Ovens that fit onto camp stoves, incredible meals in dehydrated form, and sophisticated water purifiers. We didn’t buy all that, but here are two fun new things we did get: I love the look of those classic tin cups for camping. But the cups are too hot to hold when they have anything hot in them, which makes drinking coffee a challenge. Plus, after a few camping trips they tend to rust. Today we got a silicone bowl and … Continue reading

Family Camping Fun

We just returned from our camping trip at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. And we are all quite sandy. Blowing sand got in our eyes, ears, hair, clothes and camera. Still, we had a great time. Sometimes people are amazed that we take the three kids and the dog camping. But I tell them camping with kids really isn’t hard. Kids seem to take to the wild quickly. They start playing with rocks and pine cones. They start trying to climb trees. And they start asking how far away they can explore. I’ve found that children do better on … Continue reading

Packing for Camping

We are busy packing for a camping trip. We haven’t gone camping as a family in a long time. Our nine year old twins are very excited. They are running around, laughing, jumping, yelling, and asking a zillion questions. I’m trying hard to keep patient. I’m also trying to remember that packing for a trip is fun for them, not a chore to be gotten through like it is for us. Tonight we went to the store to buy camping food, supplies for s’mores, hot chocolate, cider, things for dinner and breakfast, and of course some cookies. It wouldn’t be … Continue reading

Scrapbooking on a Camping Trip

As avid outdoors man, or woman I guess, it is no wonder that I enjoy camping so much, as do my children. However, sometimes when we go on a camping trip, we find ourselves with some down time that we don’t know what to do with. I miss my scrapbook space, where I often retreat when inspiration kicks in. So several years ago, we began scrapbooking on our camping trips. In fact, we have an upcoming camping trip that we are preparing for, and I am trying to decide what to bring and spending some time assembling some kits to … Continue reading

Summer RV Adventure

There is nothing quite like hitting the highway in a half-car, half-house contraption in order to save money on food and lodging. If you can afford the rental and the gas, then vacationing in an RV is not a bad option considering its versatility. However, before you head out on the open road in one of these homes on wheels there are a few factors to consider: Packing Regardless of the size of your RV, packing wisely is always a good idea. This is especially true when it comes to kitchen items. If you are traveling with children, then you … Continue reading

I’m Back!

As I haven’t blogged in over a month, I feel the need to explain my absence. In the course of about two months, my husband graduated from college, received a job in a different city, we moved, and we attended two family reunions (one that required a plane trip and sleeping in a tent). Those events would keep any person busy, but attempting to do all of them with an 11-month-old? That’s a different story. To begin, packing up an apartment while trying to keep my child entertained was no easy feat, especially because I strongly believe in attachment parenting. … Continue reading

Daring Chloe – Laura Jensen Walker

“Daring Chloe” is the first book in a new series by award-winning author Laura Jensen Walker. The series is entitled “Getaway Girls” and is about a group of women who comprise a book club, and have decided to live out some of the adventures they read about. Chloe’s fiancé showed his true colors the night before their wedding. He sent her a text message in the middle of the night, telling her he couldn’t go through with the ceremony, and then he went backpacking out in the wilderness. Chloe can’t understand what went wrong, and she really can’t understand why … Continue reading

Top Ten Signs Your Daughter is Going to Girls’ Camp

Yes, my daughter turned twelve last week, and she’s heading up to Girls’ Camp as a yearling tomorrow. I believe I’ve been exhibiting some signs that may be typical of other mothers in my position. 1. Following her around the house, clutching her in my arms, and wailing, “My baby! My baby!” 2. Lying awake at night three days before the fact wondering if I shouldn’t throw an extra three or four pairs of underwear in her suitcase. 3. On every visiting teaching visit to the Young Women President’s house for four months previous, peppering her with so many questions … Continue reading
