Carve a Disney Pumpkin

As I’ve always said I’m not a very crafty person. When it comes to fall activities I’d far rather focus on the eating: candy/caramel apples, apple pie, pumpkin pie, apple cider, and more. Give me the guts left over from a pumpkin carving session, I’ll roast up the seeds and put them in cranberry sauce, or apply the pumpkin innards to a pie or a chocolate chip pumpkin cake. For the more artistic types, however, or at least for those who enjoy crafts more than I do, this month/season gives the once-a-year opportunity for one unique craft: pumpkin carving. Those … Continue reading

Limited Mess Pumpkin Decorating Ideas for Kids

Whereas I was tempted to title this blog “No Mess Pumpkin Decorating Ideas,” I know better than to do so given that glitter is involved in some of the following projects. Trust me; as a mom of a craft-loving preschooler I know what happens when a few containers of glitter are placed on an art table. Still, I’ll take a beach full of sandy glitter over a sink full of slimy pumpkin guts any day. With that said, here are a few more ways you can make your pumpkin stand out from the other gourds this Halloween: Glitter Pumpkins While … Continue reading

Paper Pumpkin Faces

If you are looking for a way to occupy small children who are excited for Halloween, try this one. As an added plus they can learn about shapes, names for the different part of the face, and facial expression. Make a pumpkin face without a pumpkin. Foam craft sheets are great for this project, but felt or even construction paper will work too. Cut a large pumpkin shape from your foam, felt, or paper. Then cut out all sorts of shapes for eyes, noses, and mouths. You might also want to cut out strips for hair and eyebrows, and even … Continue reading

Celebrate Halloween All Day

When it comes to celebrating Halloween, most people focus on trick-or-treating or costume parties, both of which are traditionally nighttime events. However, in our family, Halloween is an all-day affair. Basically, we party from sun up to sun down. I’m kidding. Though, we do nosh from sunrise to the witching hour, on foods I make especially for the holiday. Breakfast, lunch and dinner (and the occasional late snack) all feature Halloween-inspired foods, including these favorites that I whipped up last year: PUMPKIN PECAN PANCAKES Ingredients: 1 cup all purpose flour 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon … Continue reading

Corn Crafts with Preschoolers

Fall – the season of corn, pumpkins, and leaves. It’s also a season resplendent with orange, red, yellow, and black crafts – handprint turkeys, anyone? One of my very favorite parts of early fall is the corn. I love eating it, I love the look of the yellow kernels, and I love corn silk, especially after it’s been dried. What kinds of crafts can you do with corn? Decorative corn is great for crafting, both for centerpieces and for play. With the husks and the silk of everyday eating corn, you can also make some fantastic creations. Here are some … Continue reading

Scrumptious Spooky Treats for Your Halloween Buffet

Seventeen days and counting until ghosts and ghouls come knocking. Are you ready? If you are planning a Halloween Monster Bash to celebrate the haunted holiday you might consider adding these simple yet scrumptious treats to your menu. Both were served at my daughter’s playgroup Halloween luncheon last year. Each mom was given a Halloween-themed recipe from a magazine, cookbook or newspaper and asked to make it as creepy as possible. In the end the buffet table was filled with Tombstone Brownies, Pumpkin Face Pizzas, and ghost, pumpkin, bat, bone and cat shaped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (using cookie … Continue reading

Halloween School Parties – Room Mom Tips

Helping with a school Halloween party can be lots of fun. My favorite part is getting to see all the children dressed up. I like to bring either a Polaroid or a digital camera to capture the kids in their costumes. Ideally, I like to download and print their pictures before the day is over, but that rarely happens. Even if they don’t get the pictures back until the next day, it still makes a nice souvenir. For food I’ve found that vegetable and cheese trays balance out the sugar and overexcited children, too. I usually make spider crackers. I … Continue reading

Family Fun Week in Review

Pumpkins and the looming Halloween holiday are right in the Family Fun bloggers wheelhouse and as a result this past week saw numerous fun articles designed to help get your family ready for the spooky 31st. Lauri suggests a pumpkin carving party in place of, or in addition to, a traditional Halloween costume party. Any parent of a preschool-age child probably knows how much kids that age love to paint. Here is a terrific idea for a magical Halloween painting project, courtesy of Lauri. If you have run out of wall space in your home, consider turning your windows into … Continue reading

Safety Tips for Baby’s First Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner and so you may very well be getting ready to celebrate baby’s first Halloween. Halloween can be enjoyed by all if you put into practice some good common sense safety tips. Baby Costumes Choose fabric that is flame resistant. I have even seen some parents buy pajamas that have a Halloween theme. While I admit those big costumes are awfully cute, safety for you baby is more important. Make sure that the costume you buy is not going to pose a choking or strangulation hazard to your baby. Buttons and beads should be sewn … Continue reading
