Pressing Flowers

If your flowers haven’t wilted in the hot, dry weather then it’s a great time of year to try pressing flowers. Why would you press flowers? Because they turn out beautiful with very little effort. Because they are an inexpensive project that teaches appreciation of nature. And because you can use them for cards, art projects, gift tags, and even bookmarks. Flower presses are nice to have, they offer even pressure on the flowers and are often treated with nonstick materials. But if you want to give this hobby a try before you spend any money then an old phone … Continue reading

Give Yourself the Gift of Love This Valentine’s Day

Most of us associate Valentine’s Day with the receiving or giving of gifts to others.  How about making this year one about giving the greatest gift of all?  I’m talking about a gift that begins with you…loving yourself enough to make some important lifestyle changes. Now that the New Year isn’t feeling so new anymore, many of us start to lose grip on the goals and resolutions we set.  The energy and enthusiasm we felt in the beginning of the year to exercise more and eat less has started to wane. In fact, some people might even be suffering from … Continue reading

Location, Location, Location

In real estate, it’s all about location. However, photographers have to be just as concerned about where they set-up for a shoot if they want to get the most bang for their buck. For example, if you are planning to snap photos indoors you’ll want to be careful not to place your subject directly in front of a window. Doing so will likely wash out the shot or cause unwanted shadows. In addition, take a look around before pressing down on your camera’ shutter button. It’s important to eliminate background distractions. Also, be sure that you don’t have your subject … Continue reading

Wall Art! Get Your Wall Art!

When I got pregnant, my husband and I were temporarily living in another state while he completed a yearlong, paid internship. My due date was right around the time we had to pack up and move back to where his school is located. Because we knew our departure would happen soon after our daughter was born, we didn’t set up a bedroom for her. Our living situation this year is also temporary, because my husband graduates from school in May, and we’ll most likely move to wherever his job takes him. Since our daughter co-sleeps with us and we’re moving … Continue reading

Soap Carving

Soap carving is one of the classic summer camp and Scout crafts. We tried soap carving today, and it’s much harder than I remember. Ivory soap is the soap of choice; it’s soft and not too expensive, especially when you buy a large pack. We used orange sticks (the kind to push back cuticles) to etch in our designs, and to make marks on our finished work. For carving we used clay tools and knives. For older children this can be a great first instruction on how to handle and use paring knives or pocketknives, with correct instruction and supervision … Continue reading

Preserving Mother’s Day Gifts

It is only a few days before Mother’s Day. Are you ready? One of the gifts that we usually give and get on Mother’s Day is flowers. Wouldn’t it be nice to preserve the gift to last longer than the few days before it wilts? How about preserving cards and other memories of the day? Here are some ideas. For cards and home made drawings, why not frame them and hang them on the wall. You can create a collage or pick one or two special paper memories and hang them in individual frames. One cute area for this is … Continue reading

Spare Change – Aubrey Mace

Riley hates New Year’s Resolutions. She makes them every year, and every year, she fails to complete them. She thinks she’ll just skip the whole thing for once, but her mother insists. Deciding to make the easiest resolution ever, Riley sets her goal—she’ll save her pennies all year long and at the end, she’ll buy something nice for herself. This plan only lasts a short time, though. She works in a care center for cancer patients, and as she sees them come in day after day for their chemotherapy, her heart is touched and she wants to do something to … Continue reading

Wedding Bells Ring for Trump

Will the fourth time be the charm for Ivana Trump? Frankly, I could care less, yet I still felt compelled to blog about The Donald’s ex-wife’s weekend nuptials. And no, it’s not because this is the 59-year-old’s fourth trip down the aisle. Nor is it because she is marrying a guy she could have theoretically given birth to. (Trump’s newest husband is Rossano Rubicondi a 35-year-old Italian model-actor who she has dated since he was in his late 20s.) The reason I’m compelled to write about the Saturday soiree is because of where it took place and who helped foot … Continue reading

Birthday Cake Ideas for a Tea Party

If you haven’t done it yet, make sure to check out Lauri’s Fun blog to get ideas for great activities to go along with food–all thought of for your special girl on her special day! I have to begin by saying I for one thing that the birthday cake is highly over rated! For little fingers, I find myself liking cupcakes much better. It’s a lot less mess, and I find you can be more creative. Also, when serving cupcakes, it’s possible to do a few different flavors. I find that kids who don’t share my daughter’s infatuation with chocolate … Continue reading

Being a Bridesmaid with Grace…

In a few of my previous articles I have begun a small series on weddings and wedding planning. While many ladies are searching the web now for ideas and more information about weddings, others are trying to avoid them altogether. There is a saying that goes something like “always a bridesmaid, never a bride”. This refers to the ladies out there that are always asked to be in the wedding but never the one planning the wedding. This time of year can be very depressing for some people. The warm season is entering. Flowers are beginning to bloom and baby … Continue reading
