The Pumpkin Carve

After I finished the first part of my qualifying examinations for my doctoral degree my family and I found our way to a local apple tree farm. We took a nice drive, dressed a little more warmly than usual, and took our time looking high and low in the various trees for fresh apples free of pesticides and wormholes. We had such a wonderful time when we went the first time that we planned to do it again. With Halloween just around the corner we went to pick up a pumpkin. I realized, once we got home, how interesting new … Continue reading

Pumpkin Carving Party

If you are looking for an easy Halloween party, consider an alternative. A friend of ours throws a pumpkin carving party most years. I think it’s a great idea, especially if Halloween falls mid week. The pumpkin carving party is great for families, the entertainment is built right in to the party, and it doesn’t require much food or decoration. Everyone brings a pumpkin. Outside, our friend has a table set up with knives and scoops for gutting the pumpkin. She has another … Continue reading

Get Ready for Holiday Scrapping

Wal-Mart has its aisles stuffed with Halloween paraphernalia, so I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that my local grocery store is also hawking ghoulish goodies. The problem with shopping at a mega-giant supermarket that sells scrapbook materials right next to the produce section is that you are constantly bombarded with temptations to add to your collection. And with the holiday season right around the corner you can image how much willpower I’m forced to exercise, so as to not end up with a cart full of holiday-themed stickers, stamps and albums. Yesterday I was this close to buying a pumpkin … Continue reading

Ghoulish Good Times In Chicago

I’ve told you where you can get your scare on in the Windy City, but if you have younger ghosts and goblins you’ll want to haunt more kid-friendly events. If you live anywhere near Chicago I would highly recommend attending some of the following family friendly Halloween-related events. Last weekend, we went to Pumpkinpalooza where my 3-year-old daughter had a blast painting pumpkins, creating Native-American crafts, decorating wooden bats, feeding llamas, and gorging herself on Halloween candy… all in 88 degree weather. (Now that’s freaky!) We can’t wait to get to attend these events: TERRORIFIC THURSDAY For city kids who … Continue reading
