Setting Expectations for Dog Training

Do we expect too much from our dogs? Sometimes we think that dogs should jump to obey our orders, and many dog owners soon find out that perhaps we’re not viewing dogs and how we train them in the right way. Pet website ZooToo has an overview of how the dog training process works, explaining why many of us might be going about training in the wrong way. What’s always important to remember, especially when bringing a new dog home, is that there will be a honeymoon period but that period will end. New dogs, especially ones from shelters, brought … Continue reading

The Rain

When my family was living in Texas we very infrequently saw rain. This was not entirely problematic. It was certainly a change for us though. The climate differences were many and we had to adjust accordingly. My wife needed new hair product. Our skin was noticeably drier. We were subjected to previously unknown allergies caused by previously non-existent pollens. Time after time, though, the climate proved to be so markedly different that we found ourselves missing certain things: rain, trees, green grass, and more. Recently we moved back north closer to family and the places we grew up. We’ve been … Continue reading

Underappreciated Disney Films: Lilo & Stitch

Lilo: “We’re a broken family, aren’t we?” Nani: “No. Maybe a little. Maybe a lot. I shouldn’t have yelled at you.” Lilo: “We’re sisters, it’s our job. I like you better as a sister than as a mom. And you like me better as a sister than a rabbit, right?” Whenever I bring up 2002’s “Lilo & Stitch,” most people in the room immediately exclaim “I love that movie!” But despite that it doesn’t seem to get the same sort of attention as other beloved Disney films. Due to its relatively recent release, it’s not a movie most people grew … Continue reading

Talking to Bob Harper: Trainer From “The Biggest Loser” Part 2

In my last blog I talked about the conference call I participated in with Bob Harper, trainer from the hit TV show “The Biggest Loser.” Bob is working in conjunction with Extra gum for the 3PM Snackdown Challenge. The idea behind this challenge is to put down the snack and instead, pick up a pack of Extra sugar-free gum. Replacing that craving for a sweet treat with a piece of five calorie sugar-free gum is a much healthier alternative. When you go to the website you can enter to win a free training session with Bob Harper. The winner score … Continue reading

Tips for Staying Fit While Traveling

Summer’s here, and with it comes family vacations and other holiday road trips. However, just because you are away from home doesn’t mean that you have to compromise your daily fitness routine. Consider the following the next time you try to make excuses for not exercising on the road: *If you are a runner, traveling to a different city gives you the chance to jog along new trails and view different scenery. *If you are a weightlifter, traveling could mean getting to use unique fitness equipment at your hotel’s gym. *Traveling provides the opportunity to switch up your exercise routine-if … Continue reading

Joy and Your Brain

I’ve just finished reading ‘This is Your Brain on Joy’ by Dr. Earl Henslin and found it fascinating reading. Although this book is about joy, it also provides a lot of help for marriage. Since I love quizzes, I was particularly interested in the Amen Brain System Checklist, which was created by Dr Daniel G. Amen. It’s not a quiz where you have right and wrong answers, so much as one which helps identify the dominant parts of the brain from the five areas mentioned, and gives an indication of certain type of brain activity and personality, for example those … Continue reading
