The luck of the Irish is on the side of frugal travelers this month. Several hotels are offering money-saving deals on St. Patrick’s Day themed packages.  Meanwhile, some cities are featuring holiday fun for the entire family for free, including: California:  Go green in sunny San Diego this year.  On Saturday, March 16th the city will be hosting an Irish bash like no other beginning with a massive St. Patrick’s Day parade.  It features more than 120 marching bands, towering floats, dancers, bagpipe contingents, singers, drill teams, clowns and a variety of other entries.  The parade kicks off at 10:30 … Continue reading

A Baby Naming Story

A fun part of family history is sharing the stories behind how each person in the family got his or her name. A while ago, I was discussing how my husband and I were having trouble selecting a name for our baby. Our baby naming story for our first son was pretty straightforward. One night my husband suggested a name and I thought that it was just perfect. His name is Dylan James Delaney, and his middle name, James, is my father’s name. I had always wanted to use my father’s name as a middle name if I had a … Continue reading

Happy Sober St. Patrick’s Day

It’s St. Patrick’s Day. The one day of the year that your kids can pinch each other and get away with it… or start a fight, but what’s new? So, really St. Patrick’s Day is like any other day, only with a wee bit more green and a lot more alcohol. Hopefully, your kids will surround themselves more with the former than the latter. Especially if they’re under 21. If you have teens you may want to think twice before letting them out of your sight tonight. According to news reports, drunken driving incidents spike on St. Patrick’s Day to … Continue reading

Last-Minute St. Patrick’s Day Fun

History is being made in Chicago right now. It’s the first time ever that the mercury has hit 84 degrees on St. Patrick’s Day. Talk about lucky. Who needs four-leaf clovers, rainbows and pots of gold when you’ve got record-breaking spring temperatures? What’s more, the Windy City is not the only place where Mother Nature is confusing March for June. Unusually high temperatures are being recorded from coast-to-coast. Forget about slaving over a hot stove making Corned Beef and Cabbage. Rather, break out the brats, heat up the grill and make this festive green pasta salad to dine al fresco: … Continue reading

Get Lucky on St. Patrick’s Day

I know a lot of people looking to get lucky on St. Patrick’s Day. I’m hoping to win the lottery; my daughter is hoping to snag a leprechaun; and thousands of NCAA basketball fans are hoping their team advances to the Sweet 16. Saturday will reveal whose holiday wish comes true. In the meantime, you can increase your chances of having a fun-filled St. Patrick’s Day by taking matters into your own hands. Instead of pub crawling (or crawling away from a pub after one too many Guinnesses), consider hosting your own St. Paddy’s Day shindig filled with kid-friendly activities … Continue reading

Sham-rockin’ St. Patrick’s Day Fun

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. While many will be spending the day celebrating the luck of the Irish at their corner pub, if you have your own band of little leprechauns at home, then you might benefit from the following kid-friendly holiday activities: HOMEMADE POT OF GOLD Materials: Markers or Crayons Paper plate Scissors Gold glitter Glue Directions: Gently fold the paper plate in half, trying not to crease it tightly. Draw a capital letter “D” on the plate, using the light crease line as starting point for the back of the “D.” You should have about … Continue reading

Easy Ways to Go Green for St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is a major deal at my daughter’s school. She attends a Catholic school, which honors the patron saint of Ireland and engineers. As part of Thursday’s celebrations students are allowed to ditch their standard red, white and blue uniforms and go green. My first grader loves non-uniform days and since green is her favorite color she is determined to go all out for St. Patrick’s Day. This, of course, meant that we had to haul it over to Party City the other day because wearing her “Mom’s Good Luck Charm” shirt and green pants simply wasn’t going … Continue reading

Indoor St. Patrick’s Day Fun

Mother Nature and the St. Patrick’s Day leprechaun must be at war in my neck of the woods because after a string of cloudless days forecasters are predicting that March 17th will be a major washout. Thunder, lightning, heavy rain, fog; everything that could possibly cancel an outdoor St. Paddy’s Day celebration will descend upon our city this Thursday. Consequently, I will be moving our green-themed festivities indoors. Still, we won’t let the gloomy weather put a damper on our St. Patrick’s Day fun. Here are some of the activities we’re planning for the holiday: Look Like a Leprechaun Fill … Continue reading
