The Funnel Cakes are Not Your Friends!

The Atkins diet is not an incredibly difficult diet to follow – until you walk out the door of your home. Suddenly, there are all these foods that are not appropriate for you to eat right now. Spending the day at a Fair can be an exercise in determination, and will test your ability to avoid the temptation to eat foods that you shouldn’t be eating right now. In the time since I started the Atkins diet, I have visited my local Farmers’ Market, and I spent a day at the Renaissance Faire. Each experience presented me with foods that … Continue reading

Staying On Atkins at the Renaissance Faire

Staying on the Atkins diet is much easier when you are eating at home. It can be a bit of a challenge if you are attending a Summer festival. My family likes to visit the local Renaissance Faire when it comes to town. What on earth would I be able to eat there, without cheating on my diet? One of the events I look forward to every Summer is a visit to the Renaissance Faire. The one closest to where I live now, in California, appears briefly, for just one particular weekend. In Wisconsin, there is the Bristol Renaissance Faire, … Continue reading

Renaissance Fair Family Fun

Good Day my Lords and Ladies! We just returned from the Colorado Renaissance Fair. These festivals are held all over the country. I urge you to take the kids and go to one. They are great fun, and are even a little educational. You will see people dressed in period costume – knights, lords, ladies, fairies, pirates, and even dragons. The workers even talk in accents. None of it is perfectly historically accurate. I’m pretty sure they didn’t have “Ye Olde Cash Machine” in medieval times. But all of that can raise a lot of questions about history. Why did … Continue reading

Family Fun Tips: Face Painting Safety

Face painting is a blast whether you are doing it as part of a birthday party, a visit to a renaissance faire or learning how to do it yourself for Halloween, costume parties and more. So with Halloween not that far away, let’s talk about some safety tips to keep in mind when it comes to face painting your kids, your self or both. You Need to Use the RIGHT Paints – Just because paint is non-toxic does not mean it is safe to use on your body parts. Be sure to invest in a brand of paint that is … Continue reading

Check into a Disney Character Room

I’m torn between two very different impulses when thinking about my eventual Disney World vacation. One part of me wants to keep the vacation simple, to stay in a hotel with a kitchen outside of the resort so I can save money on lodging and food. That’s the part of me that will probably win out. If I’m to afford a Disney vacation, that’s likely what I’ll have to do. But there’s another part of me, the kid still in there that’s especially pushing me to make that trip to Orlando. That part doesn’t necessarily want to go all out, … Continue reading

Roy E. Disney Dies, Aged 79

On December 16, 2009 Roy Edward Disney, a powerful and fundamental force in the Disney company, succumbed to his year-long battle with cancer. Though his face bore a strong resemblance to his famous uncle Walt, Roy’s continuance of Walt Disney’s legacy involved far more than looks. The son of Walt’s brother Roy O., who co-founded the entertainment company with Walt in 1923, Roy didn’t join the family business right away. After attending Pomona College and then Harvard University, Roy first became a film editor on the television show “Dragnet” in 1952. Before long Roy did follow in his family’s footsteps … Continue reading

Football Travel Deals

I happen to live amongst the most dedicated football fans in the world. Green Bay, Wisconsin–home to the legendary Green Bay Packers, historic Lambeau Field, and hundreds of thousand of die-hard cheeseheads who claim that they bleed green and gold. And just to our south sits another famous football stadium—-Camp Randall, where I used to spend practically every fall Saturday during my college years cheering on the Wisconsin Badgers. People in Wisconsin take football very seriously. But, I assume so do all the folks that travel here and to other parts of the nation to root on their respective home … Continue reading

Wrapping Paper Rolls – Swords, Sabers, Words and More

All the wrapping may now be over. If so, you are probably knee deep in wrapping paper rolls – those long brown cardboard tubes that could also be found inside a roll of toilet paper if you ever happen to find yourself in the bathroom of a Giant’s castle. These tubes are great fun for kids of any age. The good times will surely last longer than the paper once wrapped around them! So don’t throw them away just yet. Allow me to relay some good, cheap and creative ways to use these tubes. The most obvious use of these … Continue reading
