While the play dough recipes posted previously are not to be eaten, your kids can eat these crafts. Mom and Dad will enjoy them too.

Sugar Cookie Dough

You can make your own sugar cookie dough, following the recipe below, or you can purchase rolls of ready to bake sugar cookie dough for this project. If you're using refrigerated dough, remove it from the refrigerator in advance so it can soften up.

  • First, everyone must wash his or her hands thoroughly.
  • Next, remove the cookie dough from the package and divide into equal amounts for each person.
  • Knead the cookie dough until you have a soft ball.
  • Sculpt the dough into shapes and characters (or you can use cookie cutters if you like).
  • Don't make sculptures too large or they will be difficult to bake.
  • Bake according to package (or recipe) directions.
  • Allow sculptures to cool fully before attempting to decorate them.
  • "Paint" with different colored icings and tubes of gel (see icing recipe below).
  • Apply sprinkles or colored sugar granules and use small candies for eyes, nose, etc.
  • Eat your creations!

Easy Sugar Cookie Dough Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1-teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2-teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup butter flavored shortening (or equal parts butter and shortening)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla (or your favorite extract)
  • 1 egg

Mix shortening and butter until creamy then begin mixing in sugar and the vanilla. Next, add the egg and mix well. Combine dry ingredients and mix them together in a separate bowl. Slowly add dry ingredients to the creamy mixture and continue stirring until dough begins to stick together. Knead dough by hand until it forms a soft ball.

To bake, preheat the oven to 350, and place sculptured dough on un-greased cookie sheet. Bake average size shapes for about 9-10 minutes. Adjust baking time as necessary for larger creations, checking the bottoms of the cookies occasionally. Cool completely and decorate as noted above.

Easy Icing

Pour two cups of powdered sugar into a mixing bowl. Mix in two teaspoons of softened (not melted) butter. Add milk two to three drops at a time as needed to achieve the proper consistency. Separate and add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl to make different colored icing.
