Never Underestimate the Healing Power of Ice Cream

Yesterday Tyler was outside playing when he ran up to me screaming bloody murder. He had fallen and skinned both knees. After cleaning up the wounds and applying a nice flexible Band-Aid, I was all ready to send him on his way when he turned to me and said, “I think some ice cream will make it feel better.” Ah, the innocence of youth. Wouldn’t it be great if we could ease all of our problems with a nice big old bowl of ice cream? As adults, we know that life’s not that simple but kids really think they can … Continue reading

Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone

Most of us operate within a certain comfort zone. In the book, Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway, Dr. Susan Jeffers says that we all make decision based on the “confines of our comfortable space.” We might be willing to pay $75 for a pair of shoes, for example, but would squirm if asked to pay $100. She recommends that we seek to widen our space by doing something new and uncomfortable each day. The risk can be small or bold. We should, as Nike says, just do it. Jeffers’ book is not a parenting book, it’s a book … Continue reading

The Candy Lady

One of the fondest memories I have from my childhood was going to the “candy lady”. Seems like every neighborhood had one. The candy lady was usually an elderly (at least to us kids) neighborhood lady who sold snacks from her house. Candy, of course, was on the menu along with cookies, chips, soda and frozen cups. For those of you not familiar with what a frozen cup is, it’s basically really, really sweet Kool-Aid, frozen in Styrofoam cups. Sometimes during the hot summer months, she would have ice-cream treats; individual treats or she would simply dish up a cup … Continue reading

Beta Fish, Hermit Crabs and Bulbs, Oh My!

Have you ever bought your child a toy, or a gift that they were so excited about that you just had to step it up a notch? Yesterday afternoon, my three year old daughter and I went to Target. They have this great new little dollar section in the front of the store that I refer to as the “bribe aisle”. She was an angel yesterday while I was picking up a few odds-and-ends, so when I finished shopping, we made a bee-line for the bribe aisle. She started shuffling through fake earrings, princess tiaras and plastic shoes. Suddenly she … Continue reading

Family Fun Week in Review: December 31 – January 6

We recently incorporated Kids’ Crafts into Family Fun, so I hope you haven’t missed anything. If you did, you can check here as well as other Week in Review posts to find out what’s been going on. Well, there’s nothing to report for December 31, so apparently, we were all too busy having fun with our families on New Year’s Eve to write about it. We got back to work on New Year’s Day, and started the first day of January 2007 talking about Writing Letters and Family Games. On the second day of this brand new year, there was … Continue reading

Sharing your Childhood Passions with your Kids

To share a movie, a toy, or a book from your own childhood days with your kids today is a special bonding experience that every parent must get the chance to enjoy. Over the past several months we have exposed our daughter to several of my wife’s favorite characters and movies from the early to mid-eighties, when she was a little girl herself. We have all the original Strawberry Shortcake videos, not the glossy, hip ones that are produced today but the sweet, pastel classics from the 1980’s. Titles such as Big Apple City, Housewarming Surprise, and Pets on Parade … Continue reading
