Spend Earth Day in the Great Outdoors

Uncle Sam is jumping on the Earth Day bandwagon by encouraging you to head outside this week. It may just be coincidence, but National Park Week is taking place from April 17-25, just in time for Thursday’s Earth Day celebrations. From now through next Sunday entrance fees will be waived at 392 national parks. In addition, many parks have organized events, talks, demonstrations and volunteer clean-ups to encourage visitors to check out what Mother Nature has to offer at our nation’s most spectacular natural treasures. Some of the more interesting events include: April 18th-Get ready to cheer while you watch … Continue reading

Teaching Kids about Earth Day

I have always said that it is important to teach green ways and social consciousness to the kids. After all, they are the future! So with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, you may want to start teaching your children to be green with a few of these ideas: * Teach children to turn off electronics such as the computer and television when not in use. * If you live near stores, take the children for a walk there instead of driving. * Teach children to turn off the lights when they leave the room. * Start … Continue reading

Simple Earth Day Projects for Kids

Earth Day 2010 is less than a week away. On April 22nd my daughter’s elementary school is planning a swap to celebrate U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson’s idea to inspire awareness and appreciation for the environment. The kids are being asked to bring in gently used clothing, unwanted accessories, books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, household items, toys, school supplies, and toiletries. The gym will then be turned into a swap meet where students, staff and parents can choose items they want or need and take them … Continue reading

Tips for Recycling Magazines

If there is one thing we get in this house, it is a ton of magazines each week. Hardly a day goes by when we don’t get one and most days it is more than one. Considering my love for pop culture, I have to have my weekly People, Entertainment Weekly, Star Magazine, and Enquirer plus I get Ladies Home Journal, Readers Digest and that’s not even taking into consideration the magazines my husband and son get! Call me old fashioned, but I still like my magazines in paper form rather than reading them online. I know it isn’t very … Continue reading
