Spring Break Survival Tips

Did you watch the news tonight? All three major networks led their shows with the scary news that we’ll likely be paying $5 per gallon for gas by the time Memorial Day weekend rolls around. If you are planning to take a road trip this year, now is the time to do it. Spring break is an ideal time to load up the family and hit the road to explore our great nation; however, if you don’t plan properly the adventure could turn into vacation purgatory. To help you survive what could be a very, very long trip, consider stocking … Continue reading

A Fun Breakfast with Horton Hears a Who

We had breakfast today at the International House of Pancakes. We haven’t seen the new “Horton Hears a Who” movie yet, but the marketers are doing their job. My ten year olds knew all about the special menu at IHOP featuring green eggs and ham, a drink called a Beezlenut Splash, and Who-Cakes. They passed on the green eggs. Since the eggs are made with creamed spinach, I could hardly blame them. The Who-Cakes came in graduated stack of five cakes, secured together with a pink lollipop stuck through their middles. Blue and pink glazed icing ran over the top … Continue reading

Spring Break Survival – Part One

This week is our spring break. The kids have been out of school since Friday afternoon. I’m enjoying the chance to sleep in. But the kids are already showing signs of restlessness. I’ve got a few ideas for keeping them busy this week so I thought I’d offer those ideas here for other parents in a Spring Break Survival Series. Lots of libraries offer special activities for spring break week. Our library has great stuff for every day of this week – children’s movies, storytellers, magic shows, and plays. Today we are going to a silly play based on Greek … Continue reading

Spring Break Travel Tips

My college co-ed cousins go on spring break next week. (They will be sunning it up in a tropical location while I sit here shedding tears on my fading tan.) Typically, college students make up round one of the revolving door of spring breakers who collectively crowd the nation’s highways, beaches, and skies this time of year. If you plan to spend the spring recess journeying to sunny (or snowy) destinations on a much-needed family vacation, consider keeping some of my favorite tips in mind: Do Your Homework. Does anyone dare enter the Magic Kingdom without a plan? Don’t answer … Continue reading

More Family-Friendly Spring Break Destinations

The tan from my Hawaiian winter holiday is still fresh so why am I blogging about spring break vacation destinations? Because I want to remain a shade darker than dirty snow? (Okay, that may be part of the reason.) Actually, the real reason we are researching family-friendly spring break destinations is because we had such a wonderful time with our latest multi-generational vacation we can’t wait to do it all over again in a new location. The following are more destinations that are on our list: Yellowstone National Park Before you roll your eyes and mutter: “cliché,” consider this: The … Continue reading

A Warning About Mulch

It wasn’t until my brother’s best friend’s house burned to the ground (the fire investigator said the fire was sparked by lint buildup in the dryer) that I began completing regular maintenance on my dryer. I’m ashamed to admit that it took someone else’s tragedy to raise awareness in my own home. Now it’s happened again. We have been experiencing unusually mild weather (actually, record breaking temperatures in the 80s) in our neck of the woods, which has enticed many homeowners to get a jump start on spring planting and other yard work. Unfortunately, for one local homeowner his efforts … Continue reading

Weekend Wanderings: The Dallas World Aquarium

A few weeks ago, I lost a very good friend and since that time, I’ve made a new commitment to living life and to stop putting things off for another time or a so called better time. As a part of this commitment, my daughter and I have become weekend wanderers and we’re determined to explore our local area and visit the attractions, see the sights and learn what we can. So this week, I am introducing you to what I hope will be the first of many Weekend Wanderings. The Dallas World Aquarium Located in the West End, The … Continue reading
