Sun-sational Games for Kidsby Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger 11 Jul 2009 06:47 AM Summer vacation is more than halfway done. Still, some parents are wondering if they can make it to September with their sanity in tact. If you are running out of ways to keep your children entertained while they enjoy their break from school, consider the following ideas: WATER WORLD When I get tired of hearing the Mom-I'm-bored blues, I fill up the kiddie pool and head to the kitchen. While there I collect every water-friendly object I own from cups to colanders, old dish soap bottles, utensils, brushes, and turkey basters. Then, I plop the kids in the pool and let them discover the joys of water using their new "toys." HOMEMADE KAZOO Materials: Toilet paper tubes or paper towel tubes Crayons or markers Wax paper cut into 4"x4" square Rubber bands Pencil Embellishments-stickers, glitter glue, sequins, etc. Directions: Color and decorate the tubes with crayons, markers, stickers and other embellishments. Secure a piece of wax paper to one end of the tube using a rubber band. Poke 4-6 small holes in the wax paper using a pencil. Have your child talk, sing or hum into the uncovered opening. The vibration will make the buzzing sound of a kazoo. WET AND WILD VOLLEYBALL Materials: A low net (either a volley ball or badminton net) Two old sheets or two beach towels Water balloons Directions: Divide kids into two teams and have them stand on opposite sides of the net. Each team member needs to hold onto a corner of the sheet or large beach towel. Place a water balloon in the center of one team's sheet or towel. Then, have the team toss the balloon over the net, into the other team's sheet or towel. To make the game more challenging, place a single water balloon in the middle of both teams' sheet or towel and have them toss up and try to catch the opposing team's balloon at the same time.
