Memorial Day marked the unofficial start of the summer season, but most kids are still in school for a couple more weeks. That gives moms and dads a little bit of time to prepare for long hot days when kids are home 24/7.

The following fun activities are ideal for school kids of all ages looking to stay cool during the dog days of summer:

KOOL AID FINGER PAINT:

Ingredients:

2 cups flour

2 packs unsweetened Kool-Aid (in your favorite colors)

1/2 cup salt

3 cups boiling water

3 tablespoons oil

Directions:

Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl.

Add the wet ingredients and stir well.

Let sit for about two minutes, then spray some water on paper (to make painting easier) and let your kids use their creativity to make Kool-Aid masterpieces.

Use a variety of primary colors and mix them to make elaborate paintings.

HOMEMADE COOKIE PUDDING POPS

Ingredients:

1 package (3.9 oz) chocolate instant pudding mix

2 cups cold milk

6 Oreo cookies

1/2 cup thawed Cool Whip

Wooden Popsicle sticks or plastic spoons

Directions:

Beat pudding mix and milk in large bowl with whisk.

Place cookies in Ziploc bag and use rolling pin to crush cookies.

Add cookies and Cool Whip to pudding. Stir until blended.

Spoon into 9 small paper or plastic cups.

Insert wooden Popsicle stick or plastic spoon into each cup for handle.

Freeze 5 hours or overnight.

To remove from cup, place bottom of cup in bowl of warm water 15 seconds. Press up on bottom of cup and remove pudding pop for kids to enjoy.

DRESSED UP HULA HOOPS

Here's something to make the next time you hear your kids moan, "Mom, I'm bored!" Grab some leftover streamers from the last birthday party you hosted and cut them into strips about 2 feet long. Then, tie each strip to a hula hoop. Space them approximately 5 inches apart from one another. When your child spins the hoop, the colorful streamers will fly.
