Affordable Party Decorations

Whether you are looking for a fun activity for your upcoming Super Bowl party, your child’s birthday celebration or a back-to-school bash, there’s nothing more exciting than a piñata.  What’s more, the smash and grab craft is quite affordable if you make your own at home. A piñata is little more than a large papier mache. All you need to make a basic piñata is a balloon, newspaper (cut into approximately one-inch wide strips), liquid starch, masking tape, glue, and crepe paper streamers. To start, blow up a large balloon.  This can be used to make a football shape, a … Continue reading

Family Fun on Super Bowl Sunday

The big game is less than four days away.  On Sunday, millions of families will be gathering around their televisions to watch the Baltimore Ravens take on the San Francisco 49ers… or at least to watch the uber-hyped Super Bowl commercials. It would be great if the entire family thought watching a 4-hour game was the epitome of fun.  However, if you have young kids, they may want a bit more to do than just sit on the couch and cheer on men wearing tight pants. If you are looking for super fun ideas that will score big with little … Continue reading

Puppy Party Fun

Happy birthday, Haka! My neighbor’s dog turned 13 last week and to celebrate she threw him a super soiree that outdid parties I’ve attend for humans. Of course, my neighbor treats her dog like a child—even though he is 91 in human years—so a full-blown pooch party really is not an unexpected move on her part. She requested that human guests dress up like dogs to make the birthday pup feel loved. My 6-year-old wore a white sweat suit that I decorated with black fabric spots and I wore a store-bought doggie Halloween mask, black pants and a black shirt. … Continue reading

Have a Pop Party

When it comes to throwing a kiddie party you don’t want to compete with the moms at my daughter’s school. Oh.my.word. These ladies don’t mess around. It’s all or nothing with these shindigs, and by all I mean call MTV because My Super Sweet 16 can’t hold a candle to some of the pimped out parties my six-year-old has attended in the last few months. Remember when I described the coloring page activity I had at my daughter’s sixth birthday party? The pages were there to keep the kids entertained while waiting for the rest of the guests to arrive. … Continue reading

Ideas for St. Patrick’s Day Leftovers

St. Patrick’s Day is over, though you might have a hard time telling by looking in my refrigerator: No beer and lots of corned beef and cabbage leftovers. Blame it on the leprechauns or the fact that I overdid it on the corned beef. Regardless, I have my work cut out for me to try to breathe new life into all this leftover brine-cured beef. Fortunately, I have a few recipes that are perfect for leftover corned beef and cabbage. If you gorged on the traditional St. Patrick’s Day fare last night, and still have a hankering for the pickled … Continue reading

Entertaining: Party Tips

One of the best pieces of advice for throwing a great party is to make sure you’re organized. Sure, that can cover a lot of territory, but it’s really all just basic stuff. Try these tips: Check the Weather and Be Ready for it If it’s wet or muddy outside, you’ll need to be prepared to store shoes and boots when people take them off as they enter. Shallow boxes or bins beside the door will help keep footwear organized, off your carpets, and out of the walkway. You may need something larger than you’re your typical welcome mat too. … Continue reading
