Teach Your Kids American Sign Language

When I was a little girl, one of my teachers decided that teaching our class the alphabet in American Sign Language would make a fun project. She was right. We all thought it was an awesome idea, and I remember the hand signs for the alphabet to this day.

Not only was it fun and interesting to learn but this information has also come in handy when trying to communicate with hearing impaired individuals. While spelling words out letter-by-letter may seem a little clumsy as compared to learning signs for words and phrases, it is a good start, and it's simple to learn. Most kids pick it up fairly easily.

There are fun puzzles and quizzes online that you can use to test your skills once you feel you have a good grasp on this language. Test your alphabet identification skills with the American Sign Language Alphabet Word Search Puzzle. It's printable if you would like to make copies.

Later, you can teach your kids more signs, and they will be able to fill in with letters if they don't know the sign for a particular word, of if they forget.

Teaching your children sign language is not only a great way to help them learn a new skill or to keep them entertained; it's a gift you can give them that will last a lifetime. It is also a great opportunity for you to begin learning the language along with them, if you don't already know it.
