Teaching kids Spanish when you don’t know a lick of it

“How are you going to teach foreign languages?” This is one of the most common questions homeschoolers hear when people find out that you are going to continue homeschooling through high school. “Resources”, is my answer. The truth is I don’t know a lick of any foreign language, (outside of Latin songs learned in Catholic school and some choice Spanish words my Dominican roommate taught me in college). Whether I have resources or not, having kids learn a language when you have not way of determining results, can be unsettling. But what public school parent knows every subject that their … Continue reading

Teaching Your Sunbeam to Attend Class

I’m a bit worn out from my experiences at church yesterday. I have a three-year-old whose idea of going to church includes running around, climbing on tables, and very loudly protesting the idea of being there. He’s just being three, but three-year-olds are old enough to learn proper church behavior. As the parent, you best know your child and can determine what are the proper ways to teach him. During sacrament meeting, we keep him entertained with coloring books and magnets that he can stick on the chairs in front of us. Usually about three-quarters of the way through the … Continue reading

Learning Through Song

Some one recently explained to me that her 4-year-old child who she is homeschooling learns best through song. This method of learning is so effective for him that he has learned his times tables. (I know for a fact that his method is very effective as my Jamaican husband and siblings learned to memorize multiplication facts in the same way at a very early age.) She asked for more ideas for educational music. Here are my recommendations. My favorite education music/cd’s is School House Rock. I purchased the 30th Anniversary issue that includes every School House Rock song ever created. … Continue reading

Teaching through Song

One of our roles as parents is teaching our children things that we feel are important. It begins by helping them learn about the little world around them when they are tiny and expands into teaching them about the great big world out there as they grow. Soon, we’re helping them get ready to start school and before long, helping them with homework. Memorizing facts, and especially lists, can often become monotonous. One of the great ways to make memorization more fun -not to mention more effective- is to make up little songs. I remember being taught this way in … Continue reading

Teaching Children Through Song

Over the years I have found that one of the most effective ways to teach children about the Bible or Biblical concepts is through song. There are many advantages to using songs as a way to help children learn about Biblical ideas. Songs are fun, exciting, and interesting to children. Singing is an engaging activity, both mentally and physically. Children can sing these songs just about anytime from riding to school or doing their chores. Songs also provide an easy way for children to remember Bible stories or Biblical things. Below I have listed just a few songs which can … Continue reading

Sharing Through Primary Songs — Alison Palmer

Today I stopped by my local bookstore and talked with Alison Palmer, a talented nonfiction author, who was there signing copies of her new book, “Sharing Through Primary Songs.” This is the third book in a series designed to help adults teach children about music in ways that is fun and uplifting. When I picked up the book, I was amazed at the organization that went into it. Each section has the title of a Primary song, followed by a list of craft supplies you’ll need to make the crafts outlined, plus instructions on how to do the crafts. You’ll … Continue reading

Teaching your Child to Stay in Bed

Being a single parent probably means that you arrive home after a day of work only to find the kids need supper, baths, homework needs to be done, the house needs to be picked up, and the list goes on. Therefore, once you get the children in bed, you want them to stay there. However, many children will go to bed but then find getting up is more fun. I think every parent has dealt with this issue. You get through dinner, bath time, stories have been read, songs have been sung, and a sip of water has been provided. … Continue reading

Songs Every Christian Should Know

In my previous blog I wrote about Bible school songs that I think every child (as well as adult) should know. But what are some “adult” (for lack of a better word) songs which everyone should know? When discussing this topic I think it is important to note the purpose of singing given in the New Testament. In Colossians 3:16 the Bible states: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” The songs which we sing to … Continue reading

Introducing the New Education Blog

Ah, the brand new blog all about education! This is a huge topic, so we will address as many current issues and questions as we can – your comments and suggestions and ideas are not only welcome, they are needed! One of the best things about a blog like this is that we can not only keep people informed about what is going on with education, but we can discuss ideas and share them. We are all a community of learners. I was a substitute teacher for several years in New York City, while working on my degree in elementary … Continue reading
