Holiday Traditions Transitioning

How have your holiday traditions changed since becoming a single parent? Did you totally redesign what the holidays meant to you or did you stay the course, changing as little as possible? Ours have mostly stayed the same, I am a creature of habit and I think my daughter really dislikes change. So we’ve kept most of the traditions she has known since infancy. The biggest change is that we celebrate more with friends. That may have occurred even if I had stayed married. I think that change just naturally evolved and had nothing to do with being single. I … Continue reading

Christmas Traditions

Thanksgiving has finally arrived and now thoughts can turn towards Christmas. That is, unless you have already been thinking of Christmas since Halloween. I on the other hand am following Nordstrom’s lead. In case you missed it, Nordstrom had a sign that said the store wouldn’t be decking its halls until November 27th because it liked the idea of celebrating one holiday at a time. But now the time is here and I am ready for some Christmas spirit. I was thinking today about Christmas traditions. My family and I have a somewhat odd one – on Thanksgiving, we watch … Continue reading

Continuing Traditions

The day after Thanksgiving is the day our tree goes up. Actually, we have three. I know it sounds like over kill but it’s really not. Going all out for Christmas decorating is one way I continue the traditions Hailey has enjoyed all her life. When I was married my ex husband really didn’t celebrate Christmas so I went overboard to make up for him. Now that I’m divorced, it’s a tradititon. Hailey always says it looks like Christmas exploded in our house, but I know she looks forward to it every year. If I tried to cut back on … Continue reading

Surviving Thanksgiving With Your Relatives

Thanksgiving is a holiday that usually includes celebrations in the form of whatever traditions your family has established. Over time, families change, and this can cause conflict about how and where to spend Thanksgiving. Here is some advice that you can use to help survive another Thanksgiving holiday with your relatives. There are some Thanksgiving traditions that most people who celebrate this holiday choose to do every year. People gather together with as many family members as possible, and spend time with each other. One can expect that dinner will include a turkey, some stuffing, lots of vegetables, and maybe … Continue reading

Traditions Part 2

When families try to make traditions for their kids it can be extremely difficult to mix traditions that both parents grew up with, with ones that they would like to have for their new family. At our house there are two holidays that we always have at our house and they are Easter and Thanksgiving. On both days we all take part in making the holiday dinner. For Thanksgiving we do something a little different. I started this one when my sister and I were grown up and she had her own children. I started taking the kids to the … Continue reading

Happy Thanksgiving 2010

1am: Dad goes to bed after trying desperately to get some reading done prior the Thanksgiving. Trying not to do any work on the holiday itself. Everyone else was asleep. 6am: An alarm goes off that we forgot to turn off in order to sleep in. Oh well. So it goes. It was apparently turned off mid-sleep as no one really remembers how it stopped. 8:30am: Mom wakes up Dad. They scurry about the house as their son sleeps soundly. They ready the turkey. Dad’s hands are freezing as the insides of the turkey are still frozen as he runs … Continue reading

Family Stories About Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for being thankful for all the wonderful things in your life. Many people spend the week of Thanksgiving visiting with members of their family. Genealogists can spend this holiday hearing about, and recording, the family stories that are shared over dinner. Does your family have stories about Thanksgiving? It seems like every family has some Thanksgiving traditions that they do each and every year. Maybe everyone meets for Thanksgiving dinner at grandma’s house. Your family might spend Thanksgiving day itself at the home of your parent’s, and the day before, or day after, visiting with your … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Traditions to Try

I love reading about other people’s family traditions. Here are some traditions for Thanksgiving that I wish I’d started a long time ago. The first is the Thanksgiving tablecloth. There are several variations on this theme. The idea is to use a special tablecloth only for Thanksgiving. On the tablecloth people can write down either their names, or what they are particularly thankful for. Then you can either use fabric paint or paint markers to go over the cloth to preserve the names from year to year. I’ve also read about people who embroidered over the names and messages. When … Continue reading

Brad and Angelina’s Vietnamese Thanksgiving

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie must not like turkey and stuffing. Then again, they are self-professed “non-traditionalists” so I suppose none of us should be surprised that this year the couple and their children traded in the traditional American Thanksgiving Day meal for a lavish Vietnamese spread in Ho Chi Minh City. Or, maybe not following tradition is in fact their way of keeping with their own traditions. You’ll remember last year Brangelina spent their first Thanksgiving holiday together aiding earthquake victims in Pakistan last year. So, hey, why not make going global a tradition this year, too. You may … Continue reading

Happy Thanksgiving: Giving Thanks

Well, another year is almost over and we have the opportunity to look back and reflect. We can indulge in wonderful, homemade foods and the company of the people we love. I hope each of you and all the people in your lives has a lovely, joyous Thanksgiving Day tomorrow. Giving Thanks When you get ready to eat dinner, if someone asks you to give thanks, don’t be shy. It’s not as hard to do as you think. Just think of all your blessings and thank your Higher Power for them. Or, if you prefer to keep it short and … Continue reading
