The Home Depot: Kid's Workshops

For more family fun, this could be a great family activity for dads and their kids, though I know lots of moms (myself included) who enjoy the opportunities provided by The Home Depot. The kids workshops at Home Depot are free and they offer a number of How-To Clinics for kids between the ages of 5 and 12. The workshops are usually offered on the first Saturday of every month.

Different Types of Projects

The workshops offer all kinds of opportunities to do projects like making a toolbox, a fire truck or building your own mailbox. You can make a birdhouse, a bench or even a frame for a photo or other art object. The idea behind the workshops is not just all the neat things you can make, but also to teach kids how to do it themselves.

Doing it yourself is not just about having the tools and the skills, but having the mental wherewithal and understanding. It's also about learning how to use tools and to use them responsibily and safely - there is great emphasis about never doing any of these activities without the supervision of a parent. It's also a great way for parents and kids to have some good one-on-one time together.

Not only will your child receive their new project that they've constructed, but they will also get a kid sized orange apron like the employees at Home Depot and they will also receive an achievement pin. With all the projects my daughter and I like to do, the Home Depot workshops are a great time for her and her dad to do some projects and building items of their own. They've made a bench that they then painted and decorated with leaves and that now sits proudly in her playroom.

Fun Facts

According to the Home Depot website:

  • Since 1997, there have been over 12 million projects built at the Kid's Workshops
  • Over 750,000 kids have built their first toolbox at a Home Depot
  • 600,000 bird houses have been built at Home Depot in a Kid's Workshop
  • On average, 75 children attend the workshops and at many stores that average is almost 200 kids
  • 290,000 children have built step stools at Kid's Workshops

All told - a Home Depot kid's workshop is a great opportunity for parents and their kids. Have you ever been to a Home Depot Kid's Workshop? If so, what did you build?
