Have Fun this Summer

I never put together a summer bucket list.  I saw blogs filled with printables and ideas for a bucket list and just pushed the idea aside.  I quietly envied those with the freedom for a bucket list but figured I would never have the time.  It was summer and that meant it was my time to get some projects completed and work on building up my graphic design business again.  My business partner and I have a list a mile long of how we will run our business and what services we would offer.  Most of June has consisted of … Continue reading

Fun Father’s Day Reads

Forget about the tacky tie, fluorescent golf balls, and the tennis racket-shaped bug zapper.  What Dad really wants this Father’s Day is some quality time with the TV remote, his trusty recliner and a plate of bacon. Of course, what Dad wants for the upcoming holiday and what his enthusiastic young offspring want for him may be vastly different.  Fortunately, the following Father’s Day reads may be the key to compromise.  Kids can cuddle up with Dad on his favorite chair and share quality time reading the delightful holiday-themed page turners… while Mom cooks a pile of pork products for a post-story time … Continue reading

How to Get a Free TV

In the Romans household, we teach them to be frugal at a young age, so my eldest son was excited to tell me a related story when he got home from school yesterday afternoon. His best friend’s family recently got a very large flat screen television for free. A free TV is pretty good. The family went out to purchase their new television and paid full price. They then took it home and hooked everything up. With the first show they watched, they noticed a small red line in the middle of the screen. It wasn’t something glaring or overly … Continue reading

How to Make Eating at Home Fun

Eating at home saves money. That is just a fact. I took my kids out to lunch at a family friendly restaurant for a treat, and with tip we spend half of our weekly food bill that feeds not only the kids and I but also my husband. Since we don’t often eat out, I had forgotten how much it really costs to eat out these days. Still, the kids love to do it. In fact, eight times out of ten that would normally be their choice. Well, it was that way, before I started getting more purposeful about making … Continue reading

TV Show Examines How Diners React to Disruptive Autistic Child

ABC has a news program called “What Would You Do?”. A new episode examines how patrons in a diner react when a teenager who has autism becomes disruptive. It is an example of what families that have a child who has autism often face from other patrons when the family dines out. “What Would You Do?” is hosted by John Quinones. It appears on ABC. This news program goes into public places and sets scenes for the general public to react to. The purpose is to see how people typically react to a particular situation. Actors are sent in to … Continue reading

Fun for Multi-Generational Get-Togethers

Growing up, my maternal grandparents lived less than two miles away from my home, while my great-grandparents lived less than 8 miles away. Consequently, it was not uncommon for three or four generations of family members to gather on the weekends for a barbeque or other function. Besides blood, food was the tie that bound us all together. Oh, and games. My family loves “healthy competition.” I realize that many families are not as blessed to live so close to immediate and extended relatives, so you might want to save these family game night activities for your next reunion. Otherwise, … Continue reading

Fun Christmas Bling

Who can resist a bit of bling around the holidays? I am not a flashy person, but when I saw Martha Stewart’s latest Christmas creation I stopped dead in my tracks. I actually turned off my vacuum and turned all of my attention to the TV where a tree bedazzled with dozens of shiny beaded ornaments and garland stood like a beacon of beaded glory. There’s no way I have the time, talent or budget to recreate Martha’s beaded masterpieces; however, I did some research online and found a few cheaper and affordable alternatives that can be made by people … Continue reading

Three Dimensional TV

I love technology. I wish I had the inclination to invent something, because technology is amazing. There have been so many technological advances during my lifetime. Microwave Oven My parents bought their house when I was 10 months old. The house was built in 1915 and was always very hot in the summer. Mom didn’t turn on the oven, nor did she allow the children to do so, when the weather was warm because it made the house that much hotter. The microwave certainly helped. VCR The first VCR I remember was enormous. One of my sister’s friends brought it … Continue reading

Do You Expect TV To Make Your Baby Smarter?

Educational television for babies – does it work? I admit that my daughter watched television before she turned two, but her heart wasn’t in it. She looked, looked away, and turned to her toy octopus and started eating it again. I believe that was some sort of commentary on the movie, but I’m not sure quite what. I have not quite been sold on educational television for kids. The Planet Earth series is educational, and I watch and discuss it with my daughter, now four. But educational television for a baby? Not so brain-building, though perhaps a distraction for five … Continue reading

Fall Weekend Travel Fun

Just because the temperatures are falling doesn’t mean you have to turn into a hermit. Couch potatoes, who like to bake in front of the television on chilly autumn days, don’t know what they are missing outside. The change in seasons has prompted a slew of exciting travel options, including: THE VOODOO EXPERIENCE If you love alternative music, then you’ll want to hit the road and head to New Orleans from October 30-November 1.
