Apples to Apples – Game Review

Last night our family played Apples to Apples. We laughed harder than we have in a long time. It only takes a few minutes to learn how to play, is a fast moving game, and it is great for multiple ages. The game comes with red apple cards and green apple cards, no dice, no board, no other pieces. Players take turns being the judge. The judge puts down a green card. Green cards have descriptive words like cowardly, refreshing, dainty, frazzled and heartless. The other players each choose a red card. These red cards each have the name of … Continue reading

Zooreka – Game Review

Zooreka from Cranium games won the Toy Industry Association’s 2007 Game of the Year. I can see why it won. It’s unique and imaginative, a good simple math equivalency lesson and a good first lesson or at least an awareness of probability. It’s also a good game for different ages to play together. My children love animals and were excited to get the chance to build their own zoo. Zooreka can be purchased for under $20. The game is for kids eight years old and up and for two to four players. It takes around half an hour to forty … Continue reading

Whoonu – Game Review

We hope that our holiday time with families will be filled with laughter and a sense of love and belonging. Sometimes though, there are too many age gaps between cousins for them to get along. Sometimes the grandparent and grandchild who only see each once a year feel shy with one another. If you need a perfect game for family get-togethers, Whoonu is it! Whoonu is a play on the phrase ‘Who Knew’. This game is from the inventive Cranium company. They recommend the game for ages eight and up. But anyone who can read can play this unique game. … Continue reading

Cranium Super Showdown

Here’s another game that brings a lots of laughs to our house. Cranium Super Showdown is similar to Apples to Apples in that the players take turns being the judge. On each turn the judge picks a “Contest Card”. These cards say things like “climb to the top of Mt. Everest the fastest, or “kick a winning goal”, or “make someone laugh until milk shoots out of their nose”. Each player picks from his or her hand of challengers. The “Challenger Cards” have characters like Pinocchio, Barbie, Willy Wonka, a nurse, a librarian, or a frog prince. The players each … Continue reading

Cranium Calendar

I love to browse through the calendars on sale this time of year. I picked up one the other day that I know will add a lot of fun and thinking to our family’s year. It’s the Page-A-Day calendar from Cranium. We love the Cranium games and own many of them. The full color calendar is a mini-game for each day. On day one we were asked a “polygraph” which means a true or false question. “Humans and giraffes have the same number of vertebrae in their necks.” Turns out that giraffes and humans both have seven neck vertebrae. My … Continue reading

Vacationing Away From the Kids

I have a bit of a different entry for today’s blog. For the last few days I’ve been in Mexico with my husband celebrating our twentieth anniversary. One of our nieces and her friend flew out to watch the boys for us. Our boys don’t get to see their east coast relatives very often so I was nervous about the whole thing. I left some suggestions for fun things to do while we were gone. I brought out the Whoonu game so they could all get to know each other better. Our niece was so impressed with the game that … Continue reading

Fun with Grandparents

My children are always excited to see their grandparents. And I know all their grandparents want to see them. But after the first few minutes, they often don’t know what to do with each other. After a day of traveling the grandparents are often tired and just want a rest. Instead they are watching three boys running through the house shouting how many days are left until Christmas. The challenge is to keep the visiting grandparents busy and happy without wearing them out.I want them to have a memorable Christmas, too. But I also want my loud and busy boys … Continue reading
